If you’re thinking about commissioning a pet portrait in the UK, you’re probably wondering how the process works, how much it costs, and how long it takes from first enquiry to finished artwork. These are the questions I’m asked most often — and this guide is here to answer them clearly and honestly, without any pressure or art-world jargon.
Commissioning a portrait can feel a little daunting if you’ve never done it before. My aim is always to make the process feel calm, personal, and enjoyable, whether you’re ordering a portrait as a gift, a keepsake, or a memorial piece.
What Does It Mean to Commission a Pet Portrait?
To commission a pet portrait means asking an artist to create a one-off, bespoke artwork of your pet, usually from photographs you provide. Unlike buying a print or mass-produced artwork, a commissioned portrait is created specifically for you.
For me, it’s about far more than getting the markings right. I’m always looking for the little things — the expression you recognise instantly, the softness in the eyes, or the posture that says this is them. That’s what turns a portrait into something meaningful.
Most UK pet portrait artists work from photos, so there’s no need for a formal photoshoot. Everyday phone photos are often absolutely perfect.

How to Commission a Pet Portrait in the UK – Step by Step
1. Initial Enquiry
The process usually starts with a message or enquiry form. At this stage, we’ll chat about:
The subject (dog, cat, horse, or even people)
Preferred size and medium (charcoal, pencil, watercolour, etc.)
Any deadlines (birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas)
2. Choosing Photos
This is where many people worry — but it’s rarely an issue. Clear, well-lit photos taken at eye level work best, and they don’t need to be professional. I’ll always help you choose the most suitable images and let you know if anything else would be helpful.
You’re never expected to get this perfect on your own.
3. Quotation & Booking
Once the details are agreed, I’ll provide a clear quote. Pet portrait commission prices in the UK vary depending on size, medium, and complexity. A deposit is usually taken to secure your booking.
I’m always happy to talk through options and explain what’s involved, so you can choose what feels right for you.
You can find my pricing structure on my commissions page here.
4. Creating the Artwork
Once booked in, I begin work on your portrait. I take on a limited number of commissions at a time so each piece gets the care and attention it deserves. This is the stage where everything comes together — slowly and thoughtfully. Though every artist has their own process and time scale so check all these details before paying a deposit.
5. Completion & Delivery
When your portrait is finished, it’s carefully packaged and either posted or made ready for collection. I ship portraits UK-wide and always ensure artwork is protected properly in transit. If arranging shipping with other artists check that the artwork is properly insured should it be damaged or lost.

How Much Does a Pet Portrait Cost in the UK?
One of the most common searches I see is “pet portrait commission cost UK”, which is completely understandable.
Prices depend on:
Artwork size
Medium (charcoal, pencil, watercolour, etc.)
Number of pets
Level of detail
As a general guide, hand-drawn or painted pet portraits in the UK often start from around £150/£300 and increase depending on complexity, medium and experience of the artist making the top range in the thousands.
I also offer payment plans of up to ten monthly payments, which many clients find makes commissioning artwork far more manageable and stress-free.
How Long Does a Pet Portrait Take?
Another question I’m often asked is “how long does a pet portrait take?”
This is a how long is a piece of string question - Most UK pet portrait commissions take around 4 weeks to 12 months, depending on:
Current workload
Size and medium
Time of year (lead times are longer before Christmas)
If you’re working to a specific deadline, it’s always best to get in touch as early as possible — I’ll always be honest about what’s realistic.
Medium Examples: Left - Watercolour, Right - Charcoal.
Why Commission a Pet Portrait?
People commission pet portraits for many reasons:
To celebrate a much-loved companion
As a thoughtful, personal gift
To memorialise a pet who has passed
To create a meaningful piece of art for their home
A commissioned portrait captures more than a likeness — it preserves memories, personality, and the bond you share with your pet.
Choosing the Right Pet Portrait Artist in the UK
When looking for a pet portrait artist in the UK, I always suggest choosing someone whose work genuinely resonates with you. Look for:
A style you connect with emotionally
Clear examples of previous commissions
Transparent pricing and process
Good communication
Commissioning artwork should feel exciting and reassuring — never intimidating.
